About Gray's Tire & Service Center

The History of Gray’s Tire and Service Center

For as long as he can remember, David Gray was fascinated with all things mechanical, especially motorcycles and cars. From a very early age, he knew he wanted to be in the automotive business. As a child, he spent many hours working on bicycles, lawnmowers and motorcycles. David would spend most of his Saturdays at his grandfather’s used car dealership performing odd jobs and helping the detail guy clean and prepare cars for sale. His spare time at the lot, was spent bothering Amos Broadway, the chief mechanic, who would later open his own (very well known) mechanic shop in Montgomery, Alabama.

During his high school years, David worked at a local automotive shop sweeping floors and working his way up to becoming an automotive technician, and from there, into management. While working full-time, he continued to educate himself by attending technical college, studying Automotive Technology.

At the age of 22, David decided to take the big leap of starting his own business. He found a tire store location in Wetumpka, Alabama that had gone out of business, and was vacant. With loans in hand, he closed a deal on what would become our very first store. His family and friends pulled together as a team, and spent countless hours to repair, clean and paint the store for its opening in March 1998. Through David’s hard work, focus, determination, faith, and the unconditional support of those who believed in him, the business became successful.

Starting a new business can be a daunting time for everyone involved, and David was very fortunate to have many supporters for his new endeavor, the most important of whom was his wonderful wife, Julie. She persevered through all the challenges of the new business with patience and grace, and has always been available to help when needed.

As the business succeeded, and opportunities arose, David was able to add more stores, create additional jobs and more importantly, additional options for our customers. We now have 4 locations in Wetumpka, Montgomery and Auburn, and a 5th location in the works for Prattville, Alabama. The Montgomery store was purchased from none other than Amos Broadway, the mechanic from David’s grandfather’s car dealership all those years ago, when Mr. Broadway retired.

In the 20 years since that first store opened, the Gray family has grown. David and Julie were blessed with 4 delightful children. The Gray’s Tire family has also grown, and we now have more than 35 employees. Throughout our existence, one employee, Robert O. Griggs, an ASE Master Certified Automotive Technician, has been a constant. R.O., as he is called, was a mentor and friend to David at their previous employer, sharing his knowledge and helping hone David’s skills since he was 18 years old. R.O. became our very first employee and continues to be a tremendous asset for our customers, and our company.

All of us at Gray’s Tire and Service Center are grateful for the family atmosphere encouraged and imparted by our founder, David Gray. All who know David, recognize and admire, his personal commitment to see the best in others, and his professional commitment to providing the best experience for our customers.

Stop in and say hello at any of our locations. We look forward to seeing you.
